How long does a skylight last?

Once you’ve installed a skylight you can expect it to last anywhere from twenty to thirty years. The life expectancy will depend on the manufacturer, the skill with which it was installed in the first place, and the maintenance you give it over the years.

Care and maintenance of a skylight?

Skylights don’t need a lot of maintenance. It’s a good idea to clean the interior side of the skylight once a water. Use non-abrasive cloths, mild soap, and water. You want to avoid any cloth which could scratch the glass or harsh glass cleaners like Windex, which can cause your skylight to fail.

If you see debris on your skylight, you should be careful what tools you use to remove it. Using a sharp object can result in skylight pane damage.

Skylights should not leak. If they do, it’s usually a problem with roofing or flashing. If you notice moisture accumulating along the edges of your skylight you should call us to schedule a skylight inspection right away.

Can I still have a skylight with my cathedral ceilings?

Absolutely. Your roof type doesn’t matter. There are many options for adding a skylight. We’ve added them on traditional residential roofs and on flat roofs. There’s nothing special about a cathedral ceiling that makes it ideal for skylight installation. If you have a smaller space that wouldn’t normally be suited for a full-size skylight you can add a few sun tunnels, also known as tubular skylights. You’ll get a gorgeous “recessed lighting” look.

What is the cost of a skylight?

Skylight costs can vary depending on the type of light you choose.

We can usually get a skylight installed for anywhere from $800 to $3000. This price includes both labor and the price of the skylight itself.

If you are installing multiple skylights, extended skylights, or have other special considerations then the pricing may vary somewhat.

We give each of our skylight customers a free, no-surprises estimate. Once we’ve given you a quote we don’t waver from it. You’ll be able to budget your skylight installation without fuss, and we’ll put it in once you schedule the installation with us.

If you are replacing or reflashing an existing skylight you can expect to pay $600 to $1500 per skylight. If you’ve been maintaining your skylight properly you might be able to convince your homeowner’s insurance provider to pay all or part of the cost of your skylight replacement.
